Have a good weekend!

I am escaping from work tomorrow to head down to Virginia for a weekend of riding. Hopefully the weather will stay nice! Some links for you to enjoy:

the Kentucky Derby.

The Kentucky Derby is this Saturday, May 1st and you can see all of the contenders here. I really do not have much knowledge regarding horse racing but I think my favorite is Super Saver. Following closely is Paddy O'Prado (but that is mainly because I think he's pretty).

Rachel Alexandra has been selected as the 2010 "First Lady of the Oaks".  Says Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker, founder and CEO of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Kentucky Oaks’ 2009 First Lady of the Oaks, "We won’t soon forget Rachel Alexandra’s thrilling performance in 2009 and the excitement she continues to generate all around the world. Rachel Alexandra exemplifies the spirit and strength of all women fighting this disease, and I’m thrilled she will be wearing the First Lady of the Oaks Crown for 2010."

i enjoy cupcakes.

I love creatively decorated/themed cupcakes.  These Muppet cupcakes made by Cupcake Occasions are adorable.

Another find is the blog Ming Makes Cupcakes. Everything on the site looks delicious.  Including these homemade thin mint cookies and the peanut butter cupcakes:

Meet Einstein: Part II

A video has been posted of little Einstein. I love when he shakes. And his little blankets!

Unicorns are magical.

I just sent this Serenading Unicorn to several of my friends. It truly will brighten your day. In response, someone sent me to this Cheetos Unicorn game. My day was brightened allll over again.

Rescue Me Gala & Pupcakes!

The Washington Animal Rescue League hosted their annual Rescue Me Gala at Union Station this past weekend. TLC was there filming as the ladies of Georgetown Cupcake unveiled a giant dog made entirely of cupcakes as well as a spread of dog-friendly "pupcakes." I love that even the four-legged guests dressed up for the occasion!

Morning laugh. Light and breezy.

My friends and I went through a phase of loving this video and something reminded me of it last night. It doesn't get old.

We later found this follow-up video which is equally as great. I might venture to say it is even better. The dance was obviously broken out during many late evenings.

Meet Einstein.

Meet Einstein. The miniature horse foal is the smallest ever, measuring 14 inches high and weighing only 6 pounds!

Who is Jenna and why is J. Crew sending me her picks?

I frequently get J. Crew email blasts showing me "Jenna's Picks." Knowing that the email will most likely contain several items that I love but shouldn't buy, I usually delete them very quickly. I've always wondered who exactly Jenna is and just learned more about the J. Crew executive creative director from this clip from Oprah. A day in her life looks very fun. As does some time in her closet.

movieromps.

I am not (too) embarrassed to admit that I am a Twilight fan. I just watched the trailer for Eclipse and I'm a bit excited...it looks like it might be the best movie of the saga yet (not that that is too hard to accomplish).

Seriously...

...I need a puppy.

Good morning, DC.

After a long but fun weekend spent outside with my horses I woke up this morning and I did not feel like P. Diddy. I am still drinking my coffee and searching for a good video to make me laugh and kick-start my day. In the meantime, here are a few things: Drinking and biking in DC can now get you a DUI. And is Mei Xiang the panda pregnant again? I always forget that they have this Panda Cam. I have not taken nearly enough time to enjoy it.

More bacon, please.

I mentioned in a previous post how my girlfriends and I occasionally email about bacon. It is an inside joke of sorts. And come on...bacon is funny. I recently stumbled upon this site and immediately sent it to them: http://bacontoday.com/..."Daily updates on the world of sweet, sweet bacon." Could you ask for anything more?

There is a recipe for maple bacon cupcakes, an article about bacon lollipops (the company also makes White Russian and Absinthe flavored ones) and a "My First Bacon" talking plush toy (video below). And check out the bacon bra. How can a man resist you when the sweet smell of bacon is emanating from your cleavage? Ew...too much.

Seen in DC.

This sign is hanging up at bus stops around Glover Park. I'm not trying to judge someone on their brand of footwear but I honestly do not think the cost of Aldo shoes warrants a reward for someone returning it. Even if it was brand new at the time of its disappearance (which I seriously doubt..I bet she was dancing about in the frat sludge at Gin & Tonic moments before). And if you are losing a single shoe at 3am on a Friday one must assume you took them off. And losing a shoe is minimal punishment for walking around the city barefoot. You should just be thankful and go buy yourself a new pair of shoes in celebration that you did not catch any terrible city foot disease.

Also, "went missing"? She should just be honest here...or at least creative. I'm sure if she included a little background information regarding the shenanigans occuring at the time of shoe loss...well, I might be a little more inclined to help.

happy Earth Day.

Let eHow.com teach you how to flirt.

Thank you bestweekever.tv for bringing this to my attention.  My eyes are blue. If a guy got in my face telling me that they look like blueberries....well, I think that would make me nervous. I would have to stop talking to him.

Spring is DC's season.

It is spring in DC and the weather is perfect for going out and taking advantage of all that the city has to offer! Washingtonian just released their list of Washington's Hidden Gems. I also recently started following several Facebook pages dedicated to finding fun and often unknown activities throughout the city, such as SecretDC and 365 Things to do in DC. I'm also a fan of UrbanDaddy email blasts for ideas of activities, shopping, food, etc.

I hope that it will give you hell.

I watched the new episode of Glee last night and loved Rachel's rendition of All American Rejects' Gives You Hell. Overall, it wasn't my favorite episode but I'm excited to see how everything plays out in the remainder of the season. And I really cannot wait for the Madonna episode next week!  Check out this article from The Atlantic reviewing the first episode back.

Let's find some boyfriends today.

Another video from BYT.  So weird and creepy. But I couldn't look away.

DC Food news

According to this article in DCist this morning, tonight's episode of Food Wars will be a Jumbo Slice vs. Pizza Mart contest of who serves it best. Top Chef's Carla Taylor will be a guest judge. No one wins here. Unless copious amounts of alcohol is served before shooting. But even then, that isn't really winning.

Cakes + Deliciousness = 2x Deliciousness

Hello everyone!

Caitlin has graciously invited me to be a guest blogger and I am pretty excited to have my posts appearing between pictures like this and videos like this. I decided to write my first post on cakes masquerading as other delicious things, as tsoukalis would say, all of these cakes are all ranked highly on the deliciousness index. Each of these gems offers numerous flavor combinations as well as a ton of different decorating ideas which is why I will need to acquire one of each when I get back to the US :)

1. The giant cupcake cake. The most versatile of the 3 but also the most boring. I am personally partial to the small versions of cupcakes because their personalized quality makes them more fun to eat. I would also worry that the density of the cake would make the outside a bit dry and the inside undercooked.

Deliciousness Index Rating: 8/10

2. The giant donut cake. I like this cake pan because you could just as easily do something very simple and yet still delicious, for example, a light cinnamon and vanilla cake covered with a caramel glaze or even just cinnamon and powdered sugar. Yum.

Deliciousness Index Rating: 9/10

3. And my personal favorite, the giant sandwich cake. I love the tagline for this one as well "the best thing since sliced bread!". I think the example they show would be the best way to utilize this pan, peanut butter and jelly mixture sandwiched between two slices of pound cake. I also think creamy peanut butter sandwiched between two slices of chocolate pound cake would be a 10 on the deliciousness index.

Deliciousness Index Rating: 10/10

So if any of you are looking for ideas for my next birthday, look no further.

Love to all.

Becky

Good morning :)

Get Glee(ful)

I finally caught up on watching all of the Season One Glee episodes aired so far in order. I also purchased the soundtracks and love them, though I wish my favorite performances - One and the boys vs. girls mash-ups - were included. New episodes begin tonight and I'm very excited. Neil Patrick Harris, Madonna and Gaga? Yes please.

this Otter painted a picture.

I do not know why I find this video so entertaining. But I really really do. Courtesy of BYT - Libby's Rise and Shine column always gets my day started with some laughs. You should watch the dog video she posted this morning, as well. It is truly amazing.

This guy is awesome.

He dances, can sing Whitney Houston, rocks a sweet bowl cut. I think he needs to join the cast of Glee immediately.

Have a lovely weekend!

(photo from joshua yospyn)

After a chilly day today, it should hopefully be getting warmer and sunnier in DC for the weekend. Here are some random weekend links for you :)

The Rollergirl Championships are this Saturday, April 10 starting at 4pm at the DC Armory. Watch the DC Demoncats take on Scare Force One and the Cherry Blossom Bombshells battling the Rogue Rollergirls (I love the names!). There will be tailgating in the parking lot and an after party for fans at Top of the Hill.

Done and Done will be having an all day rock show at All Souls Unitarian Church featuring six local bands and six bands from New York City. Bands include the Laughing Man, Ra Ra Rasputin, Birds of Paradise and the Subway Sadists. It starts at 1:30pm on Saturday.

The U Street Music Hall will be hosting a Release Party for Steve Starks and Nacey—part of the Nouveau Riche DJ team—on Saturday night. I've been meaning to check this place out since it opened...djs, a frat-basementy dance floor and they serve grilled cheese sandwiches at the bar? Sounds amazing. Stevey Starks can also be found at Policy's Pregame on Friday night.

In the mood for some Sunday post-brunch partying? DC Pocketgays are having their monthly Sunday School party at Local 16 starting at 3pm. There will be music by DJs TMY and Cold Case as well as drinks, prizes, and “pocket-size surprises.”

Former Top Chef contestant Mike Isabella, a chef at Zatinya, will be hosting a free cooking demonstration at the FreshFarm market in Dupont Circle on Sunday from 11am - 12pm. The demonstration will include tips on how to prepare lamb in your home kitchen and offer a taste of a few specials available during Zaytinya's Greek Easter celebration.

If I thought I was a ninja I would do something way cooler than computer programming.

Enjoy these hilarious tv screenshots.

I'm including this puppy cam again because it is the cutest thing in the entire world.

How about a 3-D burrito? (found at BYT)

i need a puppy.

If you would like a good smile and a giggle, you need to go to this puppy cam of golden retriever puppies. I just watched them romp around for about 45 seconds before passing out in a giant pile. Why are puppies so amazing. I need one.

A little Gaga singing over breakfast.

There are a lot of hilariously disturbing things going on in this video. The banana microphone, the jammies, the dad occasionally walking through the background in his underpants. But I was quite impressed by Timmy's energetic finale. Well done. I wonder if this is how their family breakfasts are every morning.

Romping around DC.

Tonight the Washington Animal Rescue League and the Wolf Trap Young Professional Society will be having a Happy Hour at MidTown Loft from 5:30-10:30 PM. There will be a drawing for tickets to the opening night of Wolf Trap’s upcoming performances of CATS and the League’s Rescue Me Gala. Proceeds will benefit Wolf Trap’s arts and education programs and the League’s initiatives to help cats and dogs in its state-of-the-art shelter and medical center for low-income pet guardians who are unable to afford veterinary care.  Congratulations to the League on the launch of their new website - and amazing job to my friend Elise, who worked so hard on its redesign!

Following the WARL event, the Real World DC cast will be having a reunion party at Midtown from 10-2:30AM.  DJs, drinks. I didn't really watch the season so I probably won't be sticking around for this :)

Another event going on tonight is Washington Post's Going Out Gurus' private happy hour at ChurchKey, the upstairs bar space at Birch & Barley. Starting at 5, guests who mention the happy hour gain access to the free food (tater tots, mac-and-cheese sticks, and flatbreads) and $4 pint specials on Allagash White, Bell's Two Hearted Ale and Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter and glasses of Gaffel Koelsch and St. Idesbald Blonde.

For a more low-key night, I think I will be heading to Kitchen on my way home from the WARL happy hour to see a coworker's friend play his weekly guitar gig.

Look at these hipsters.

I do not want it to appear that I am hating on hipsters. I love my converse and own some skinny jeans, I enjoy art and a good indie band but I definitely do not have the 'tude and have a bit too much preppy in my wardrobe to be even remotely hipster.  But there is something about them that snatches my attention and my attention has been yoinked by hipster finds quite a few times in the last couple of weeks. Perhaps you remember a previous post when I discovered the blog Look at This F*cking Hipster. Last week POLITICO ran an article about how a blogger began a similar sight about Rep. Rosa DeLauro's hipster tendencies. I stumbled upon this cartoon recently in The Atlantic, these hipster ponies, hipster wife hunting; but my favorite find is this depiction of the Evolution of the Hipster from Paste Magazine.

i heart books.

Anyone who has been in my apartment knows that it is filled with books. When I finish one, I have a tendency to toss them on the floor wherever I happen to be reading in the apartment, immediately deciding which to read next. My friends and I have started a book club (nerdy but glorious, complete with wine and snacks) and Becky has even started a book review blog called Flourish and Blotts Book News. So it is understandable why this picture immediately caught my attention when I stumbled upon it this morning on Design Crush.

kitchen wish list.

When I moved to my new apartment I owned almost nothing for my kitchen so I found a sale at Sur La Table and got some fun colorful mixing bowls, spatulas and even a green strainer. These bright items from Rice would fit right in!

(found via Oh Joy)

I love all of the color on these kitchen shelves, too!
