I really love hipsters. I feel like my adoration comes off mockingly but it really is genuine. I truly enjoy them. I also enjoy the blog Stuff Hipsters Hate. And this video about hugging hipsters. Oh, and this text.
This four day old Zedonk (half zebra, half donkey and almost as cool as a Liger) is hanging with its mother at the Chestatee Wildlife Preserve in Georgia. It is quite adorable.
Jesse Freidin is a photographer from the San Francisco area that focuses on photographing man's best friend. She recently created the Doggie Gaga Project. Here are a few of my favorites:
Something about this seems off. It is promoting abstinence but you get points for "particular social skills"? A place to practice where there aren't any social consequences? I don't think this is helping the social skills of teenage gamers. I bet it works out real well for them when they are hanging out with real, live human people and reference their avatar exes and the hijinks they got into.
They also could have used some more appealing people to explain the game in the segment. Because teenagers love hearing about sex from old/creepy people.
I fully support any festivals that encourage guests to wear costumes. I personally enjoy the dude dressed as Jacob Black. There is something extra creepy about that mask. Suggested don'ts? Don't forget a pee-hole. And don't dress while drunk.
I have found my next competitive hobby. Rock. Paper. Scissors. In January of 2006, the US Rock Paper Scissors League was started. Thank goodness someone finally established this.
"American players embody the ideals of the sport - aggression, cunning and intensity. Finally, they have the stage to showcase their mad skills. Annual nationwide tournaments will honorably determine the best RPS player in the USA, and bring on a new breed of elite athletes to make all Americans proud and unify our polarized nation."
We started moving this weekend, which involved some quality furniture moving time with my parents and more painting than I have ever done in my life. The previous decor of the house was that of a man cave - paint in various shades of brown, leather bound books. Fortunately we haven't noticed any lingering smell of rich mahogany. The painting extravaganza culminated in Lion walking through a pan of paint, covering all four paws and a section of mane in turquoise paint (yes, we painted a room turquoise. It looks fantastic). We had to put socks on him to get him downstairs without getting paint on the floor (documentation below).
On Sunday morning I decided to take a break from moving, grabbed the most convenient pair of jeans (since my things are spread between three locations at the moment) and headed to the barn to spend some leisurely time with my horses. Upon arrival, however, my dad notified me that I needed to ride one for a trainer coming to look at horses for clients. She brought a video camera. And stated that she would be posting the video to YouTube to send to clients. Well great. Because you know what else is going to be on YouTube? My left bum-cheek. I had really been meaning to throw those jeans away due to a large rip beneath the left pocket. And my "large rip" I mean the entire left leg was threatening to tear off. Phyllis is not going to be pleased about this.
Adorableness from the weekend? Leeloo, Jess' new kitten, and her attempts at playing with Stoli, their other cat. And Lion after his turquoise paint debacle.
While revamping the blog I decided that I need to post more writing along with all of the videos and articles that entertain me - I find myself in many (unintentionally) comical situations. Recently, several of these involve boys and my meeting them. My description of the perfect man-friend is tainted by too much Disney and romantic comedy viewing, not to mention my many contradicting interests. Perhaps that is where the ridiculousness begins? Or its just that ridiculousness follows me.
My navigation through "dating" is a bit stumbly. Most of my relationships have been with guys that were either friends or friends of friends so they either knew me or at least had some background info. ie, they had already discovered how endearing my weirdness is. Now, I'm meeting guys who know absolutely nothing about me and marketing myself is no easy task. I am quite weird. Not to mention my conflicting interests are all over the map. I am moving to Georgetown this weekend, went to an extremely preppy school for undergrad and sport the occasional Lilly dress. But I love nerds, particularly hipstery ones, devour books and secretly wish DC was a little more like NYC. My music tastes range from rap to indie to Disney and terrible pop songs. I have the brain of a five year old and love a good cartoon movie but find guy humor hilariousss. I ride horses, which I guess makes me seem like a princess, but actually equates to my spending most of my weekends missing out on sleep and covered in dirt (much more enjoyable than I just made it sound). So perhaps this is why I feel like I make strange first impressions? Then you toss in that I am most likely imbibing delicious cocktails - that is definitely not a good marketing tool for me. It just results in my either dancing (ridiculously and awkwardly) or telling you stories that I find hilarious but get bored part way through relaying and digressing into giggles.
Let's take this guy that I have recently hung out with a little, for example (I'm fairly sure he doesn't know about this blog but, then again, I often wonder if he is a hacker. So if you are reading this, eh...its probably not the first time I've been awkward. Hopefully you find this humorous?). He is a nerd and a bit hipstery (bonuses) and I generally enjoy his company. But I don't really think he gets me. I suppose it may come off the wrong way when I ask silly questions like, "Are you a gamer?" and "How do you feel about Narnia?" But really, I'm just curious. Bonus points for witty answers. Again, I heart nerds. He looks a little like R Pattz so I may have asked if he was concerned about the sun exposing his sparkling skin when he mentioned a recent beach trip. He didn't seem too amused. I, however, giggled at my cleverness. Perhaps it is weird that I think Chopsticks (my stuffed panda) waving is so hilarious (it really is). And I get a little text-happy about hanging out - I just get really excited about doing fun things with people when I'm not traveling and actually in the city of D.C. and awake (and I've probably been drinking so I may have lost count the number of texts). So I guess what I'm getting at is, I know it is tough to resist my mad game.
I don't really want to repress my weirdness, as I find it pretty funny. But I'm also not quite ready to accept a life of collecting cats, gaming, and drinking Capri Suns while talking to Chopsticks about books (oh yeah, I like to talk about books when I'm intoxicated, too. Reaaal sexy). I'll keep throwing my moves around and see what happens. And in the meantime I'll keep a look out for some nice cats. Ideally ones that do cool tricks.
I spend a lot of time in transit. Here are some of my frequently played songs from the week. Kind of a random assortment, really. And Jason Derulo's video is necessary. He's got moves.
What's better than puppies and cupcakes? I say not much, and luckily for the Washington Animal Rescue League, 1.16 million people agree. The League was featured on the second episode of TLC's newest show, DC Cupcakes. Our episode, Cupcakes and Puppies, had the highest amount of viewers of any of the episodes thus far- 1.158 million! The show follows Georgetown Cupcake sisters, Sophie LaMontagne and Katherine Kallinis, as they bake up different cupcake arrangements for events throughout DC. The series premiere, which opened with back-to-back episodes on July 16, garnered more viewers than the CW network held for the entire evening. And since I work in communications at the Washington Animal Rescue League, I couldn't be happier. Well, maybe if I had eaten a red velvet cupcake while I watched.
The TLC production company approached us (the League) earlier this year with interest about incorporating our work into an episode. After several days of filming somewhat awkward "reality" scenes, we wrapped up filming at the League, and production moved to our Gala. The Georgetown Cupcake sisteers wanted to unveil a massive sheepdog made entirely of cupcakes at our annual Rescue Me Gala (the district's most enjoyable dog-friendly black tie affair). Even better, they bake hundreds of dog-friendly 'pupcakes', which pleased our 4-legged companions immensely. I even took one home to my dog, Lion, who was quite thankful.
It was an awesome experience for the Washington Animal Rescue League to be featured on national television--let alone TLC, one of my favorite networks. And the League's episode had 34,000 more viewers than the series premiere! It was exciting to see two things that I love, puppies and cupcakes, come together on television, and to be a part of it all.
Want to watch the show? Tune in to DC Cupcakes on TLC Fridays at 10 p.m. this summer. For a clip of our episode, Cupcakes and Puppies, see this page. For an article by the Washington Post about the show, visit this link.
As much as I want to say how creepy and weird they are, the KIA hamster commercials make me laugh. And I could tell you that they are for KIA. That is huge considering I usually remember commercials but have no recollection what they are actually adverstising. I giggle everytime I see the hamsters driving the toaster. In fact last night I was driving behind a KIA and started giggling to myself. You know, imagining that the car was a toaster.
I just learned some amazing facts. Such as 1) There is a National Hot-Dog and Sausage Council. 2) July is "Hot Dog Month." And 3) National Hot Dog Day is today (or the 23rd...it seems a bit unclear but I'm going to go with what hot-dog.org says...".org" just means truth to me. ha.)
But it gets better. I then stumbled upon this: Pickle Packers International. Please note that their url is ilovepickles.org. And their offices are in DC. Sadly, their Annual Meeting and Product Showcase is in San Antonio, TX this year. It isn't even that I love pickles that much...I would just love to see what a Pickle Showcase entails.
I have finally revamped the blog and plan to start posting regularly again. I've been so busy romping about this summer that I got a little distracted...traveling, moving to a new house next week, ponies and hanging out with friends has kept me very busy! I'm also excited to report that my good friends Becky and Elise will be gracing the blog with their guest-posts :) I hope that your summers have been lovely so far!
I was going to officially begin posting again on Monday but this was too good not to share. Washingtonian shared some of this week's best Craigs List Missed Connections postings. Here is my favorite:
You: the girl in the flannel onesie with pink flowers on it Me: the guy turned on by civil war generals lets hang out.
This post raises quite a few questions. For starters, who on earth was wearing a flannel onesie on Monday? I spent most of the day in a bathing suit and still could barely handle the sun. And I don't even know where to start with the Civil War Generals fetish. Too much, sir. Too much.
